Those who don't know any better look at me with judgment in their eyes.  Some see a weird loner girl, who wears dark clothes and doesn't talk.  Some see mixed-race trash, with a coqueta mother and a small-town, white-trash father.  They see a girl that is rude and distant.  The dumbest of all see a pretty face, a toy to play with.

But I am not afraid.  I am more than what they see.  On the outside I am tough and strong, cold, showing no emotion.  But inside I am stronger, a human heart beating.   I am loyal, I work hard.  Inspiration, love, strength, burning in my heart.

It's me, just me, and I am safe.  With those who know me I am safe.  But watch those eyes hit me, those eyes of judgment, and I break.  Heart races, voice shakes, my eyes look down.  I pray.

God sees through, sees the shadows and the light.
This is an assignment for English, based on Sandra Cisneros' book of vignettes, The House on Mango Street. The assignment was to pick 5 vignettes from the book and rewrite them as our own. This is my first one, based on her vignette, "Those Who Don't." ^_^
